Salinity

Studies of transition, contradiction, and tension within the landscape surrounding my hometown in Pithara, Western Australia.

The imprint of western agriculture on the Wheatbelt’s landscape appears profound and, in many ways, irreversible. The rapid expansion of farming practices has significantly accelerated salt levels in both soil and groundwater. Prior to this intervention, nature had its own way of grappling with the surface scars left by salt, a process that unfolded gradually over millennia.

However, the introduction of western agriculture brought a more abrupt and forceful alteration to the land. Farmers, compelled to adapt, implemented methods that often imposed a harsh and regulated order upon the environment.

The outcome of this interaction is undeniably profound, revealing striking depictions of the ongoing struggle between humanity and the forces of nature.
